Botanical Drawing in the Garden at Gumboots & Wellingtons

£60.00

Come and join us for a 3 hour botanical drawing escape hosted by Rachael Rose at the absolutely beautiful Gumboots & Wellingtons in Ellerburn, right on the edge of Dalby Forest. We will spend time in Lesley’s incredible garden that she has lovingly landscaped and grown with her impressive knowledge of plants and botanicals.

The main aim for us is to create a space where you can be still, draw together and reconnect with nature while being surrounded by like minded people. We would love to create a sense of community and come together with a common interest. We all know how isolating it can be as an artist, whether it’s your job or your hobby, we want this to be a chance to learn together, draw together and be in a beautiful garden appreciating nature from an artist’s perspective. You can come alone or bring a friend with you, either way you’ll be welcomed. We won’t let you feel like you’re alone unless you choose to come for a little peace and choose a little hideaway spot. Whether you are a seasoned artist looking to hone and develop your skills or someone completely new to drawing, all are welcome.

What do you need to bring and what will you leave with?

You can either bring your own drawing materials or if you let me know I’ll make sure I bring all of the paper and drawing materials you’ll need.

You will leave with a little pack to take home that includes a beautiful botanical print, a mini botanical colouring page, a discount code for our next event if you’d like to come along again, and more. You will also leave with your observational botanical drawings that you’ve done on the day.

Hopefully you’ll leave with some new friends, a sense of calm and some new skills and knowledge with an appreciation for studying plants.

When is it?

Saturday 9th May – 9:30 am–1pm (Or make a full weekend of it if you choose by turning it into a stay and draw event at Gumboots & Wellingtons, more details on this below!) The garden will be alive and blooming beautifully!

Why not make it into to a full weekend getaway and stay at one of Gumboots & Wellingtons’ beautiful hideaways!

Tucked into the tiny hamlet of Ellerburn, on the edge of Dalby Forest, a leafy, unspoilt corner of the North York Moors National Park where dark skies glitter with endless stars.

Stay in The Hut, their spacious shepherd’s hut with wide views across open farmland. Curved roof, the warmth of the wood burner, a gentle hush, the kind of cocooning calm that invites you to slow your thoughts and settle in for a few days of being in nature.

Or choose The Den... painted black and quietly brooding against the countryside. Inside, vintage William Morris fabrics, framed moth book plates and the soft glow of the wood burning stove. Looking across the garden beyond the dry stone wall is the 11th-century St Hilda’s church, it's the perfect place for lovers of old churches & graveyards.

Designed for grown-ups and pet-free, Gumboots & Wellingtons is a place to pause, reconnect with nature, and simply be.

On the day you will:

Arrive at 9:30am, Get settled in and have a chat with other likeminded people that are in attendance. Parking is available on the day at the gorgeous 11th century church right next door to the garden. What a view it is too!

10am, We will have a little introduction from Lesley where she will tell you some information about what is growing in her garden and the story of their beautiful home, including the hideaways you can book to stay in.

We will then have some guided drawing time with Rachael where we will look at how to observe plants and leaves and look at their structure with drawing in mind. We will look at mark making techniques using a biro as the main focus, but you can use anything you’d like, pencil, paints, oil pastels, anything you’d like to bring along. That said, you don’t have to bring anything with you, you can opt to have it all provided for you on the day!

11am, You’ll be able to find your own little spot in the garden and choose a plant, a texture, a log, a leaf, anything you’d like to study and draw in your own time, or you can choose from a selection of precut plants and flowers. Rachael will be on hand to chat to and talk through any drawing questions you have and Lesley will be available to give you any plant knowledge you need if you want more information on what you are drawing.

11:30am we will have a brew (tea or coffee) and homemade cakes (made by Lesley!) or feel free to bring your own snacks along with you! You can use this time to chat together or carry on with your drawing, it’s really your choice on how you use the time.

12pm, Back to your observational drawing, you can choose to stay and focus in one spot or spend your time moving around the garden to discover new plants.

1pm, We will wrap up, collect our things, exchange contact details with anyone you’d like to keep in touch with and say our goodbyes.
